Athens, the historic capital of Greece, is a destination that seamlessly blends ancient wonders, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. Whether you’re a history buff or a family seeking memorable experiences, Athens has something for everyone. With temperatures ranging from 13°C to 19°C (55°F to 66°F) in January, it’s an ideal winter getaway. Here’s a detailed 4-day itinerary for exploring Athens with a toddler in tow, based on our family’s recent trip with our 19-month-old son, Logan.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Plaka
Accommodation: Grand Hyatt Athens We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Athens, which provided a travel cot for our toddler but had some limitations in family-friendliness, such as restricted pool access for children under six. Nonetheless, it served as a comfortable base for our explorations.
Afternoon:
-
Begin your Athens adventure by strolling through Plaka, the city’s oldest neighbourhood. This charming area is filled with narrow streets, colourful buildings, and family-friendly tavernas.
-
Enjoy lunch at one of Plaka’s traditional tavernas, where you can savour Greek staples like souvlaki, moussaka, and gyros.
Evening:
-
Relax and acclimate to the city. Athens can feel a bit hectic with its dense population and lively traffic, so take it slow on your first day.
Day 2: Acropolis and Ancient Wonders
Morning:
-
Visit the iconic Acropolis early to avoid crowds. The site isn’t stroller-friendly, so bring a baby carrier for your little one. Purchase the 3-day, 7-sites pass, which includes access to the Acropolis and other historical landmarks such as the Ancient Agora, Roman Forum, and Hadrian’s Library.
Lunch:
-
Head back to Plaka for a family-friendly meal. Many tavernas in this area offer high chairs and changing facilities.
Afternoon:
-
Explore the Flisvos Marina, a hidden gem by the coast. This area is perfect for families, with its picturesque views, sandy beaches, and multiple playgrounds that toddlers will love.
Day 3: Temple of Poseidon and Little Kook
Morning:
-
Take a half-day excursion to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. The journey offers stunning coastal views, and most tours provide car seats for children. The temple itself is a marvel of ancient architecture, and the fresh sea breeze is a welcome change from the bustling city.
Afternoon:
-
Visit Little Kook, a whimsical cafe decorated with fairy-tale themes that will captivate children and adults alike. Logan adored the magical atmosphere, making it a highlight of our trip.
Evening:
-
Return to Plaka for dinner or try a seaside taverna at Flisvos Marina for a relaxed evening by the water.
Day 4: Aegina or Relaxation
Option 1: Aegina Island
-
Instead of the rushed 3-islands-in-one-day tour (which we don’t recommend), take a ferry to Aegina, a beautiful island known for its pistachios and laid-back charm. Spend the day exploring at your own pace before returning to Athens.
Option 2: Relax and Unwind
-
Spend your final day revisiting favourite spots like Flisvos Marina or exploring the National Gardens, a serene escape in the city centre.
Family Travel Tips for Athens
-
Transportation: Uber is incredibly convenient in Athens, and while child seats aren’t mandatory in Greece, bringing your own can be helpful. Public transport isn’t as toddler-friendly, so plan accordingly.
-
Dining: Most tavernas are family-friendly, offering bread, chips, and simple dishes for picky eaters.
-
Packing: A baby carrier is essential for navigating Athens’ uneven terrain and narrow pavements.
-
Expectations: Athens is vibrant but can feel a bit run-down compared to other European capitals. Prepare for its lively charm and occasional chaos.
Final Thoughts
Athens offers a unique mix of history, culture, and family-friendly experiences. From exploring ancient ruins to enjoying the playful charm of Little Kook and the serene Flisvos Marina, there’s plenty to keep both adults and toddlers entertained. With a bit of planning and flexibility, your trip to Athens will be a memorable adventure for the whole family. Safe travels!
